Katherine Moennig is the daughter of Mary Zahn, a Broadway dancer and William Moennig, a violin maker. She belongs to a very famous family as she’s the niece of actress Blythe Danner and cousin of Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow. She has German, Scottish and Irish descent. Her friends call her ‘Alt. Gwyn’.
At 18, she moved to New York City to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She began a modeling career and started performing on stage as well. In 1999, she appeared in Our Lady Peace Video “Is Anybody Home?”. Her first biggest appearance was on ‘Young Americans’, a television series where she played Jake Pratt. Throughout her acting career, she has portrayed many lesbian and transgender roles. She auditioned for the role of Brandon Teena in ‘Boys Don’t Cry’. In the ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’, she appeared as a pre-operative transsexual.

In 2006’s ‘Art School Confidential’, she portrayed a lesbian artist. Katherine made her off-Broadway debut In April 2006 with an appearance in ‘Guardians’ opposite Lee Pace. In the sixth season of CSI: Miami, Moennig appeared as Mary Landis, a suspect.
