Jennifer Beals was born to Jeanne, an elementary school teacher and Alfred Beals, owner of a grocery store in Chicago, Illinois. She is of African-American descent on her paternal side and has Irish American ancestry on her maternal side. She has two siblings, both brothers, namely Bobby and Gregory. When she was at 10, her father died and her mother re-married Edward Cohen. She enrolled in Francis W. Parker School and Yale University and received a BA in American Literature.

In the 1980 movie ‘My Bodyguard’, she gave a minor appearance and came into limelight with her starring role in 1983 movie ‘Flashdance’, the third highest grossing US movie. She got Golden Globe nomination for her performance in that movie but controversies arose when it was revealed that she didn’t perform all of her dance moves. In 1985’s gothic horror movie ‘The Bride’, she appeared along with Sting and portrayed Eva. In 1989’s ‘Vampire’s Kiss’, Jennifer appeared as a lusty and thirsty vampire. Next, she co-starred in ‘Devil in Blue Dress’, a period film. She also appeared in a segment of the four story anthology ‘Four Rooms’ which was directed by her then husband Alexandre Rockwell. She appeared as a leading character in the 2006’s ‘The Grudge 2′. Her guest appearance was on ‘Frasier’. In the little TV drama ‘My Name is Sarah’, she appeared as Sarah Winston.

She had been married to Alexandre Rockwell from 1986 to 1996. After they broke up, she married Ken Dixon, a Canadian entrepreneur and has a daughter with him. At the 2006 San Francisco Pride Parade, Jennifer Beals was a Celebrity Grand Marshall. Jennifer Beals portrays Bette Porter on ‘The L Word’. As the series begins, Bette appears as an affluent Yale educated gal. After her night stay with Coleman, a gay, she realized that she has less interest in men. Eventually, she comes out as a gay. She dated Alice Pieszecki before she meets her long time partner Tina Kennard. In fact, she had sex with Alice. Next, she meets Bette and they both begin relationship. Their relationship faces several ups-downs throughout the show such as planning for a kid. She secured a strong fan base with her performance as a lesbian on ‘The L Word’.
